Can a Muslim woman wear jeans, leggings, or shorts in Islam?

Short answer

Yes, a Muslim woman may wear jeans, leggings, or shorts in front of her husband only.

It is ḥarām to wear such clothing in front of other than her husband including mahrams(blood or breast fed relatives) let alone non-mahrams.

Islam does not prohibit clothing by name, but by conditions of modesty (ḥijāb).

1️⃣ Clothing inside the home (with maḥrams)

Allah says:

“And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment [i.e., beauty] except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess [i.e., slaves], or those male attendants having no physical desire,or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allāh in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.(Qur’an 24:31)

What this means:

In front of maḥrams (father, brother, son, etc.): Bosom/chest must be covered by lowering from hardcover but what appears of beauty necessarily such as face and neck may be uncovered Clothing must still be modest, not sexually provocative or deliberate exposing hidden adornments.

👉 Tight jeans or leggings that highlight the shape of the thighs or hips are not permissible even in front of maḥrams, according to the ayah.

2️⃣ Clothing in front of the husband

Allah says:

“They (wives) are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them.”(Qur’an 2:187)

Islamic ruling:

A wife may beautify herself fully for her husband
Jeans, leggings, shorts — all are permissible
This is not only allowed but encouraged to strengthen marital affection

📌 There is no awrah between spouses

3️⃣ Clothing outside the home or in front of non-maḥram men

Allah commands:

“O Prophet, tell your wives, your daughters, and the believing women to draw a part of their outer garments or (Jilbabs)over themselves. That is more suitable so they will be recognized and not harmed.”(Qur’an 33:59)

And Allah says:

“And do not display yourselves as in the display of the former days of ignorance.”(Qur’an 33:33)

Conditions of proper hijab:

A woman’s clothing must:

Cover the entire body (A Jilbab covers the entire face when lowered a part of it from head to the face and even the finger nails due to long sleeves)
Be loose, not revealing body shape
Be opaque, not transparent
Not be worn for attraction or display such as pink or blue

❌ Jeans, leggings, and shorts:

Reveal body shape
Emphasize hips, thighs, and legs
Do not meet hijab requirements
Ḥarām in front of non-maḥrams or mahrams

4️⃣ Summary (Clear Ruling)

With maḥrams

⚠️ Haram except loose and modest clothing

Outside / non-maḥram men

Islam honors women, not restricts them:

Beauty is private, not public
Modesty is obedience to Allah, not culture
Hijab protects dignity, not suppresses identity
