What are the requirements for marriage here in Saudi Arabia? I’m a Christian from the Philippines, and he is an Islam from Pakistan. We are both working here in Saudia Arabia.
What are the Islamic requirements for marriage (and why they apply globally)?
1. Islam is a universal law for all mankind
Regardless of place of residence, nationality, or ethnicity, the
Sharīʿah of the final Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ is global and universal
. Unlike previous prophets who were sent to specific nations, the final Messenger was sent to
all people and all worlds
.
Allah says:
“Say, O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all.”
(Qur’an 7:158)
“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.”
(Qur’an 21:107)
“Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His servant that he may be a warner to the worlds.”
(Qur’an 25:1)
“This Qur’an has been revealed to me that I may warn you with it and whomever it reaches.”
(Qur’an 6:19)
These verses establish beyond doubt that
Islam is not regional, ethnic, or time-bound
, but the final law for all humanity.
2. Why previous prophets’ laws were limited (including Jesus عليه السلام)
Earlier prophets were sent to
specific peoples
.
Qur’an
Allah says regarding Jesus:
“And [We sent him] as a messenger to the Children of Israel…”
(Qur’an 3:49)
“O Children of Israel, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you…”
(Qur’an 61:6)
This clearly limits
his mission and law
to a particular nation.
Bible (Christian scripture)
Jesus himself confirms the same limitation:
“I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
(Matthew 15:24)
This is explicit:
only
, not all nations.
Jesus was also identified as a
Jewish king
, not a universal ruler:
“Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”
(John 19:19)
And again:
“This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”
(Matthew 27:37)
This confirms that:
His mission was within
Israel
His law was
not global
He was sent to a
specific people
3. Jesus worshipped One God (Allah)
Jesus never claimed divinity; rather, he
worshipped and submitted to One God
.
Qur’an
Allah quotes Jesus saying:
“I did not say to them except what You commanded me: ‘Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.’”
(Qur’an 5:117)
Bible
Jesus openly worshipped God and distinguished himself from Him:
“The Father is greater than I.”
(John 14:28)
“Not my will, but Yours be done.”
(Luke 22:42)
“That they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
(John 17:3)
This is clear
pure monotheism (Tawḥīd)
:
One true God
Jesus is
sent
, not worshipped
4. One belief, different laws
All prophets preached the same belief—
worship Allah alone
—but followed
different laws
according to their people.
The Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ said:
“The Prophets are brothers from different mothers; their religion is one, but their laws differ.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3443; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2365)
Allah confirms:
“For each community We appointed a law and a way.”
(Qur’an 5:48)
5. Conditions of Marriage in the Sharīʿah of the Final Prophet ﷺ
Since Islam is universal, these conditions apply
everywhere
, including Saudi Arabia.
(1) Chastity
“Chaste women from the believers and chaste women from those who were given the Scripture…”
(Qur’an 5:5)
(2) Religion
Only two categories are permitted:
Muslim women
Chaste women from the People of the Book
“Do not marry polytheistic women until they believe.”
(Qur’an 2:221)
(3) Guardian (Walī)
“There is no marriage without a guardian.”
(Abū Dāwūd 2085; Tirmidhī 1101)
If none exists:
“The ruler is the guardian for one who has no guardian.”
(Abū Dāwūd 2083)
(4) Mahr
“Give the women their dowry willingly.”
(Qur’an 4:4)
“Even if it is an iron ring.”
(Bukhārī & Muslim)
(5) Consent and witnesses
“A woman may not be married without her consent.”
(Muslim 1419)
“No marriage without a guardian and two witnesses.”
(Bayhaqī – ḥasan)
Final Summary
Jesus (عليه السلام) was sent
only to the Children of Israel
Even the Bible confirms this explicitly
Jesus worshipped
One God
All prophets had
one belief
, but
different laws
The
final and global law
is Islam
Marriage conditions are set
by Allah
, not culture or nationality
