Why is Surah Al- Fatiha important for every Salah - Namaz? Are all Ulemas / Clerics agree on it?
Here are authentic Qur’anic and Hadith proofs showing the importance of Sūrah al-Fātiḥah—that it is the Mother of the Book (Umm al-Kitāb) and essential in Ṣalāh:
📖 1. Al-Fātiḥah is “The Mother of the Book”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Al-Ḥamdu lillāhi Rabbil-‘Ālamīn is Umm al-Qur’ān (Mother of the Qur’an), Umm al-Kitāb (Mother of the Book), and the seven oft-repeated verses.”
— Sunan al-Tirmidhi (Hadith 3124)
— Also reported in Sahih al-Bukhari
🕌 1. Absolute Requirement of Al-Fātiḥah
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book (Fātiḥat al-Kitāb).”
— Sahih al-Bukhari (756)— Sahih Muslim (394)
👉 This hadith is:
General and very strong
Applies to every person praying
This is clear and unconditional, so no rak‘ah counts without Al-Fātiḥah.
🕌 2. It is REQUIRED in every Rak‘ah of Ṣalāh
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book (Fātiḥat al-Kitāb).”
— Sahih al-Bukhari (756)
— Sahih Muslim (394)
👉 This shows clearly:
- Without Al-Fātiḥah, the prayer is invalid.
🕌 3. Hadith: “Perhaps you recite behind your Imam…”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Do not do so except with the Opening of the Book, for there is no prayer for the one who does not recite it.”
— Sunan Abi Dawud (823)— Sunan al-Tirmidhi (311)
👉 This is used to argue:
Even behind an imām, you must recite Al-Fātiḥah
🌙 3. The Greatest Surah in the Qur’an
The Prophet ﷺ said to a companion:
“I will teach you the greatest surah in the Qur’an…”
Then he said:
“It is Al-Ḥamdu lillāhi Rabbil-‘Ālamīn (Al-Fātiḥah).”
— Sahih al-Bukhari (5006)
🤲 4. Allah Responds to Every Verse Recited in Prayer
The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah says:
“I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves…”
When the servant recites:
- “Al-ḥamdu lillāhi Rabbil-‘ālamīn” → Allah says: “My servant has praised Me.”
- “Ar-Raḥmān ir-Raḥīm” → “My servant has extolled Me.”
- “Māliki yawm id-dīn” → “My servant has glorified Me.”
- “Iyyāka na‘budu…” → “This is between Me and My servant…”
— Sahih Muslim (395)
✨ Summary
- Al-Fātiḥah = Umm al-Kitāb (Mother of the Book)
- It is the greatest surah
- It must
- be recited in every rak‘ah
- Allah directly responds to it in prayer
Here is the exception case, based on the incident of Abu Bakrah Nufay‘ ibn al-Harith:
An Exception in case of being late or strangled behind the imam due to him being fast
🕌 The Incident of Joining in Rukū‘
Narrated by Abu Bakrah (رضي الله عنه):
He came to the mosque while the Prophet ﷺ was in rukū‘ (bowing).
So he bowed before reaching the row, then entered the row in that state.
After the prayer, he mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“May Allah increase you in eagerness, but do not repeat it.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari (783)
⚖️ What Scholars Derived from This
From this hadith, scholars concluded:
✔️ 1. If you catch the Imām in rukū‘
- You say takbīr and go directly into rukū‘
- Even if you did NOT recite Al-Fātiḥah, your rak‘ah is valid
👉 Because:
- The Prophet ﷺ did NOT order him to repeat the rak‘ah
✔️ 2. This is an Exception
Normally:
“There is no prayer for the one who does not recite Al-Fātiḥah.”
But here:
- The person missed it due to a valid reason (joining late)
⚠️ 3. Important Correction
- The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not repeat it”
👉 Meaning: - Don’t rush and bow before reaching the row
- Join properly, calmly
🧠 Summary
- Al-Fātiḥah is obligatory in every rak‘ah
- Exception: If you join late and catch rukū‘ with the imām
- Your rak‘ah counts even without reciting Al-Fātiḥah
- But you should not rush improperly like Abu Bakrah did
Note: Many Muslims in this world may not be aware of these rulings and may pray without reciting Al-Fātiḥah behind the imām. However, their prayers are valid because they are unaware, or they may be in doubt due to a lack of proper knowledge—relying only on what this scholar or that scholar has said without understanding the evidence. Therefore, their prayer is valid, and they are not held accountable.
