Jesus as a Word from God, Not a Begotten Son

Jesus as a Word from God, Not a Begotten Son

“˹Remember˺ when the angels proclaimed, ‘O Mary! Allah gives you good news of a Word from Him. His name will be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary; honoured in this world and the Hereafter, and he will be one of those nearest ˹to Allah˺.’”
(Qur'an 3:45)

Delivering the Good News of Jesus' Birth

The phrase “a Word from Him” refers to the creation of Jesus (ʿIsa), as he was created through Allah’s command:

“Be,” and he was.

For Allah, creating Jesus was no more difficult than creating any other human being. He simply says “Be,” and it is.

Jesus as the Begotten Son of God in the Bible

According to the Holy Bible (King James Version):

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
(John 3:16)

The English word “begotten” has traditionally been understood as meaning “brought forth” or in clear Language “having sex and producing a child.” Christians generally interpret this verse as emphasizing Jesus’ unique relationship with God and his role in salvation.

From the Islamic perspective, however, Allah does not beget nor is He begotten. Therefore, attributing sonship to God is blasphemy and rejected as contrary to pure monotheism (Tawhid).

The Oneness of Allah in the Qur'an

In Surah Al-Ikhlas (112:1–4):

“Say, ‘He is Allah, [Who is] One,
Allah, the Eternal Refuge.
He neither begets nor is born,
Nor is there to Him any equivalent.’”

And in Surah Al-An‘am (6:101):

“He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. How could He have a son when He does not have a companion, and He created all things? And He is, of all things, Knowing.”

Some modern Bible translations render the Greek word monogenēs as “one and only Son” rather than “only begotten Son,” avoiding any implication of biological descent. Nevertheless, the Islamic belief remains that Jesus was a prophet and servant of Allah, created by His command, and not the literal son of God.
