 Jesus (ʿĪsā), the Living Messiah of Allah, Will Soon Return

In Islam, Jesus (ʿĪsā ibn Maryam, peace be upon him) is the Messiah (al-Masīḥ), one of the greatest prophets of Allah, born miraculously to the Virgin Mary (Maryam) without a human father. Muslims believe that he was neither crucified nor killed. Rather, Allah raised him to Himself, and he remains alive. He will return before the Day of Judgment to defeat the False Messiah (al-Dajjāl), establish justice, break the cross, kill the swine, abolish the jizyah, and rule according to the law of Allah.

Allah says:

"Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And Allah is Ever All-Mighty, All-Wise."Qur'an 4:158

Allah also says:

"And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them."Qur'an 4:159

Allah says regarding his return:

"And indeed, he is surely a sign of the Hour, so have no doubt about it, and follow Me. This is the straight path."Qur'an 43:61

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ informed us that Jesus will descend near the end of time. He said:

"By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, the son of Mary will soon descend among you as a just ruler. He will break the cross, kill the swine, abolish the jizyah, and wealth will become so abundant that no one will accept charity."Sahih al-Bukhari (3448), Sahih Muslim (155)

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

"There is no prophet between me and him (Jesus). He will descend... He will kill the Dajjāl."Sunan Abi Dawud (4324)

The return of Jesus is one of the major signs of the Day of Judgment. He will return not with a new religion, but as a follower of the final Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ, judging by the Qur'an and the Sunnah. After completing his mission, he will die a natural death, and all people will know the truth that he was the servant and Messenger of Allah—not Allah, nor the son of Allah.

May Allah keep us steadfast upon Tawḥīd and allow us to be among those who follow the truth before the return of His Messiah, ʿĪsā ibn Maryam (peace be upon him). Āmīn.
