How do you let go of feelings for someone you love?
How do you let go of feelings for someone you love?
🌙
Hello. I truly understand your feelings. The heart is delicate, and sometimes it inclines quietly, without us even realizing. But gently, I would advise you not to fix your gaze upon this Shaykh — may Allah have mercy on both of you.
Allah has already guided us with something purer and more protective for our hearts:
“Tell the believing men and believing women to reduce their gaze and guard their chastity.” (Qur’an 24:30–31)
Reducing the gaze is about avoiding sin. It is also about guarding the heart before it becomes attached in ways that distract it from its true purpose. A glance may seem small, but repeated glances can root something deeper within.
Remember: nothing is worthy of becoming the object of deep attachment except Allah — your Lord and my Lord. Every love, every admiration, every longing must ultimately return to Him.
And reflect upon the greatest moment awaiting the believers:
“Some faces, that Day, will be radiant, looking at their Lord.” (Qur’an 75:22–23)
“For those who do good is the best reward — and even more.” (Qur’an 10:26)
The scholars explained that “even more” is the honor of beholding the Face of Allah. What comparison is there between any gaze in this world and that eternal vision? How small every worldly attachment will feel when that Day arrives.
If we long to look, then let us long for that moment.
If we love, then let our love be for the One whose sight will bring everlasting joy.
As Allah says:
“Say: If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins.” (Qur’an 3:31)
May Allah purify our hearts, help us reduce our gaze, and grant us the honor of looking upon His Noble Face in the Hereafter. 🌙
